Aotearoa/New Zealand contemporary classical ensemble, Stroma, premières my composition for string trio “Heaven Is Life” featuring Tibetan Buddhist nun chants, at Public Trust Hall, Wednesday, August 27.
I stayed with the generous and kind Tibetan Buddhist nuns at Karma Chokor Dechen Nunnery in Rumtek, Sikkim, India in April this year, and recorded their chants and ceremonies. Part of this commission from Stroma is donated directly to the nuns, who look after the ‘small nuns,’ children in their care.
Heaven & Earth marks 25 years of Stroma’s fearless exploration of sound and spirit since our inaugural concert “Wind, Rain & Light” in August 2000. We recall the theme of that first concert by similarly evoking musical impressions of the earth below and the sky above.
